About Us

BioFood Cultures is a biotechnology startup dedicated to unlocking the value of Greek microbial biodiversity for the food and beverage industry. By combining scientific expertise, research-driven innovation, and industrial collaboration, we develop starter cultures and functional microbial solutions that support controlled fermentation, consistent product quality, and the creation of distinctive sensory experiences. Our mission is to bridge the gap between laboratory research and industrial application, transforming native microbial resources into sustainable, high-value solutions for the next generation of food and beverage products.

History

BioFood Cultures builds upon years of research and expertise developed at the Laboratory of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Democritus University of Thrace. Within this research environment, Greek-origin microbial strains were isolated and characterized, a unique microbial collection was established, and the first laboratory-scale and pilot-scale fermentation trials were successfully developed and evaluated.

Building on this scientific foundation, BioFood Cultures was created to translate academic research into industrial innovation. Our mission is to bring these microbial resources beyond the laboratory and into the food and beverage industry, delivering scalable starter cultures and microbial solutions that create value for producers and consumers alike.
